HP 832 inks are used in the HP Latex 630 and 730 series in 300 ml and 1-litre cartridges. HP 873 inks are used in the HP Latex 830 and R530 in 3-litre cartridges, and include an HP 873 Overcoat channel that significantly improves adhesion and scratch resistance on rigid substrates such as foamboard, acrylic, and ACM panels. Both ink families are water-based, contain no hazardous air pollutants, and hold the same core environmental certifications (UL GREENGUARD Gold, UL ECOLOGO, AgBB, French VOC A+). The key practical difference is that HP 873 extends media compatibility to rigid flatbed substrates when used in the R530, and delivers enhanced scratch durability on all outputs from the 830.

No. HP Latex inks are water-based and contain no hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) above threshold levels, and no volatile organic compounds requiring ventilation under standard occupational health regulations. Prints exit the printer dry and odour-free. This makes HP Latex suitable for printing in offices, retail environments, schools, and healthcare facilities without dedicated air extraction or operator PPE during printing. This contrasts with eco-solvent and UV-curable systems, which typically require extract ventilation or additional PPE.

HP does not support the use of third-party or refilled ink cartridges in HP Latex printers. Using non-genuine inks voids the HP warranty and can permanently damage the printhead system, which is an integral component of HP Latex printers that is expensive to replace outside of warranty. Graficomp supplies and recommends only genuine HP original inks. For DesignJet CAD plotters, the risk is similar: non-genuine inks can cause clogging, colour accuracy failure, and loss of warranty coverage on the printer and the output.

HP Latex ink cartridges carry an expiry date on the packaging, typically 2 years from the manufacture date when stored correctly (15–35°C, away from direct sunlight, in the original sealed packaging). Once installed in the printer, cartridge yield depends on print coverage, media type, and the print mode selected. On standard outdoor vinyl at production speeds, the 830/R530 (HP 873, 3-litre cartridges) typically covers several hundred square metres of output per cartridge set. HP Latex prints on laminated 3M MCS-certified cast vinyl carry a 7-year outdoor durability rating under the 3M MCS warranty programme when produced on a compatible HP Latex printer. Unlaminated prints on cast vinyl typically achieve 3 years outdoors. Short-term calendered vinyl with lamination typically achieves 1–3 years depending on UV exposure and environmental conditions. Indoor unlaminated prints on paper, textile, or banner media are not rated for outdoor use. White ink is available on HP Latex 630W, 730W, 830W, and R530W models. It is designed for transparent films (window decals, backlit films), dark-coloured vinyl, and metallic films where a white underbase is needed for accurate colour rendering. HP Latex white ink includes automatic recirculation during idle periods to prevent ink settling, which is a significant maintenance advantage over eco-solvent white ink systems that require more frequent manual maintenance.
