Why a Standalone Cutter Outperforms Integrated Print and Cut

Integrated print-and-cut units are a single device. The HP Latex 64 Plus is a second device. That distinction drives every operational advantage below.

✂️

Print and Cut Simultaneously

The cutter operates as a completely independent device. Send a cut job to the HP Latex 64 Plus while the printer is running a different production job. On integrated print-and-cut units, the printer is unavailable until cutting is complete. With a standalone cutter, both processes run in parallel.

📐

TurboCut and Tangential Emulation

Tangential emulation reorients the blade before entering sharp corners and tight curves, reducing overcut and improving shape accuracy on complex paths. TurboCut provides high-speed straight-line and gentle-curve cutting. Both modes are selectable from the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP without changing the blade or reconfiguring hardware.

📂

Cut From Any Source Material

The HP Latex 64 Plus connects to any HP Latex printer via USB and Ethernet and accepts cut jobs from the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP or HP Cutter Control software. Cut pre-printed rolls from storage, batch-cut a week of sticker jobs in one run, or feed output from any HP Latex in the range without being tied to a single printer workflow.

📦

True Shape Nesting — Up to 50% Media Savings

HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP includes True Shape Nesting, automatically arranging shapes on the media to eliminate waste. HP testing shows up to 50% media savings versus printing without nesting. For operations cutting large quantities of irregular shapes, the media cost reduction compounds significantly over a year of production.

🔍

HP Barcode and OPS Recognition

HP Barcode and Optical Position System configurations automatically identify cut jobs from HP Latex output and align the cutting path to printed registration marks. No manual positioning of cut files to match printed output. Job recognition is handled by the RIP before the roll reaches the blade.

Technical Precision and Software

TurboCut and Tangential Emulation Modes

TurboCut is the standard high-speed drag-knife mode: the blade is dragged through the media at full speed, relying on the knife tip to follow the direction of motion. It is the correct mode for straight lines, gentle curves, and any shape where cut speed is more important than corner precision.

Tangential emulation reorients the blade to the exact angle of the next path segment before the cut head reaches a corner or curve change. This prevents the overcut and rounded corners that TurboCut produces on tight geometry. For sticker artwork with sharp angles, intricate die-cut shapes, or fine lettering, Tangential emulation produces cleaner results without slowing total production speed significantly. Both modes are available from the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP without changing blades or adjusting hardware.

What Is Included in the Box

The HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution ships with everything needed to begin production: the cutter unit, cutter stand, media basket, HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP software, HP Cutter Control software, quick reference guide, setup poster, documentation software, power cords, standard holder (1), standard blades (2), cut-off knife (1), and 3-inch media flanges (set of 2). HP Applications Center design tools are included for creating new cut applications in three steps via the online platform.

HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP

HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP is the production workflow software included with every HP Latex Plus Cutting Solution. It manages both the print job sent to the connected HP Latex printer and the corresponding cut job sent to the cutter, coordinating registration mark printing and optical recognition so contour paths align accurately to printed output. True Shape Nesting is built into the RIP and runs automatically during job preparation.

For operations that already own a third-party RIP (such as Caldera), the HP Latex 64 Plus also accepts cut jobs through the HP Cutter Control software via USB and Ethernet. Contact Graficomp to confirm your existing RIP's compatibility before purchasing.

Mac users: confirm your RIP before purchasing. HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP, included with this cutter, runs on Windows only. Mac-based studios require a third-party RIP with cut support, such as Caldera. HP Cutter Control software also runs on Windows only. Graficomp can advise on the correct configuration for your workflow before purchase. Contact us at sales@graficomp.co.za.

Standalone Cutter or Integrated Print and Cut?

The HP Latex 64 Plus is the cutter behind two purchasing paths. As a standalone unit it pairs with any HP Latex printer you already own. As part of the HP Latex 630 Print and Cut Plus bundle it ships with the HP Latex 630 printer as a matched set. Either way, printer and cutter are always separate physical devices connected by USB or Ethernet, which means both can run at the same time.

Buy the standalone HP Latex 64 Plus if:

  • You already own an HP Latex printer and want to add cutting capacity
  • You need simultaneous print and cut — the cutter takes cut jobs independently while the printer is running a different job
  • You want a cutter that outlasts the printer — when you replace or upgrade your printer, you retain the cutter
  • You cut pre-printed rolls from storage or from multiple different printer sources
  • Your cutting volume is high enough to justify a dedicated device running at full capacity

Buy the HP Latex 630 Print and Cut Plus if:

  • You are starting from scratch with no existing HP Latex printer
  • You want printer and cutter together in a single purchase at bundle pricing
  • A single support contract and unified installation is the priority
  • Floor space is a consideration and you want a matched-pair footprint
Both paths use this same HP Latex 64 Plus cutter as a separate physical unit. The HP Latex 630 Print and Cut Plus bundles the HP Latex 630 printer with this cutter. Because the cutter is always a standalone device, print and cut can run simultaneously in the bundle too. When you eventually upgrade the printer, you keep the cutter.

Why HP Latex print and cut outperforms solvent all-in-one devices. Solvent print-and-cut machines integrate the cutting blade directly into the printer carriage. You print a job, wait for the print cycle to finish, then cut. The two processes cannot run simultaneously — the device is always doing one thing at a time.

With any HP Latex print and cut configuration, printer and cutter are always separate units connected by USB or Ethernet. The cutter receives jobs from the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP independently of what the printer is doing. You can print one job on the printer while the cutter finishes the previous one. If the printer goes in for service, the cutter keeps running from pre-printed stock.

A dedicated cutting plotter also gives you far more versatility than a blade built into a printer: a broader media thickness range, dedicated TurboCut and Tangential emulation modes, True Shape Nesting, and OPS barcode registration. Cutting plotters outlast printing hardware. When you replace the printer, the cutter stays.

HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers written to stand alone, optimised for AI-assisted search and direct passage retrieval.

What is the HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution?

The HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution is a 64-inch (158 cm) standalone cutting plotter designed to pair with HP Latex wide format printers for contour cutting of self-adhesive vinyl, clear film, label stock, and other flexible substrates. It uses a drag-knife in TurboCut or Tangential emulation modes, delivers up to 600 grams of adjustable downforce, and cuts at up to 113 cm/sec diagonal. HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP and HP Cutter Control software are included. HP part number 9TL91A. Sold and installed in South Africa by Graficomp.

What is the difference between the HP Latex 64 Plus standalone cutter and the HP Latex 630 Print and Cut Plus?

The HP Latex 630 Print and Cut Plus is a bundled system combining the HP Latex 630 printer with the HP Latex 64 Plus cutter in a single purchase. The printer and cutter in that system operate as a coordinated workflow within a single footprint.

The standalone HP Latex 64 Plus is the cutter component purchased separately, to pair with an existing HP Latex printer you already own. Because the two devices connect via USB and Ethernet and operate independently, the cutter can run cutting jobs while the printer is in a different production run. An integrated print-and-cut system does not allow this — the printer is occupied until the cut cycle completes.

Which HP Latex printers is the HP Latex 64 Plus compatible with?

The HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution connects directly to the HP Latex 100, 300, 500, 600, and 700 Printer Series using the included HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP. Connecting to the HP Latex 800 Series requires an upgrade of the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP. Contact Graficomp at sales@graficomp.co.za to confirm compatibility with your specific printer model before purchasing.

What media thickness can the HP Latex 64 Plus cut?

The standard drag-knife blade cuts substrates from 0.05 to 0.25 mm thick (2 to 9.8 mil). This covers self-adhesive vinyl, clear and frosted film, label stock, and lightweight banner material. The optional sandblast blade extends the maximum cut thickness to 0.8 mm (31.5 mil), covering thicker vinyl laminate combinations and specialty substrates. Card, board, and foam-back vinyl above 0.8 mm require a dedicated heavy-duty cutting plotter.

What is the difference between TurboCut and Tangential emulation modes?

TurboCut is the standard high-speed drag-knife mode. The blade is dragged through the media and follows the direction of motion. It is the correct mode for straight lines, gentle curves, and production where speed is the priority over corner precision.

Tangential emulation reorients the blade to the angle of the next path segment before reaching each corner or curve change. This prevents overcut and rounded corners on tight geometry, intricate die-cut shapes, sharp angles, and fine lettering. Both modes are available from the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP without changing blades or adjusting hardware on the cutter.

What RIP software is included, and does it run on Mac?

HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP is included with the HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution. It runs on Windows only. Mac-based studios and design practices require a third-party RIP with cut support, such as Caldera. HP Cutter Control software, also included, runs on Windows only. Graficomp can advise on the correct workflow configuration for Mac-based operations before purchase. Contact us at sales@graficomp.co.za.

What is True Shape Nesting and how much media does it save?

True Shape Nesting is a feature built into the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP. It automatically arranges irregular cut shapes on the media to minimise wasted material between shapes. HP testing shows up to 50% media savings compared to printing without nesting, based on performance demonstrations by HP in September 2020. For operations cutting large volumes of irregular shapes (stickers, labels, contour-cut decals), the reduction in substrate waste directly reduces per-unit material cost.

What is the HP Barcode and Optical Position System?

HP Barcode and Optical Position System (OPS) is a job recognition system built into the HP Latex 64 Plus and the HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP. When a job is printed on an HP Latex printer, the RIP adds a barcode and optical registration marks to the media. When the printed roll is loaded into the cutter, the cutter reads the barcode, identifies the correct cut file, and uses the optical marks to align the cutting path precisely to the printed output. This eliminates manual alignment and reduces cut registration errors on production runs.

Can the HP Latex 64 Plus cut independently without a connected HP Latex printer?

Yes. The HP Latex 64 Plus accepts cut jobs from HP Cutter Control software and HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP via USB and Ethernet, independently of any connected printer. You can load pre-printed rolls from storage, output from any HP Latex printer in the range, or any substrate where a cut file has been prepared. The cutter does not require a printer to be active or connected to execute a cut job.

What is included in the box with the HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution?

The HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution ships with: the cutter unit, cutter stand, media basket, HP FlexiPrint and Cut RIP software, HP Cutter Control software, quick reference guide, setup poster, documentation software, power cords, standard holder (1), standard blades (2), cut-off knife (1), and 3-inch media flanges (set of 2). HP Applications Center design tools are included via online access for creating new cut applications.

What warranty does the HP Latex 64 Plus carry?

The HP Latex 64 Plus Cutting Solution carries a 1-year limited hardware warranty from HP. Graficomp is an HP ASDP Certified Service Centre, authorised for in-warranty and out-of-warranty service on the full HP Latex range including the HP Latex 64 Plus.
