HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP Plotter

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP is a 36-inch (914 mm) production-grade multifunction plotter and scanner designed for high-volume AEC, GIS, and reprographics environments requiring colour output at sustained throughput, integrated scanning, and enterprise-grade security. It prints an A1 drawing in 10 seconds and sustains 360 A1 pages per hour, making it the fastest colour technical printer in its class. The XL 3800 loads two rolls simultaneously via spindle-less front drawers, outputs into a 100-page integrated stacker, and scans originals up to 50 metres in length at 600 dpi through a CIS scanner. HP Flex Tech pigment inks are the first large-format inks to achieve UL ECOLOGO Certification, supplied in 500 ml cartridges for fewer changes and a lower cost per page. PostScript 3 is native; no RIP is required for GIS maps, architectural colour drawings, or complex PDF files. Sold and serviced in South Africa by Graficomp, an HP Amplify Commercial Specialist and certified HP ASDP service partner.

Why the HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP: Four Operational Arguments

The XL 3800 is not a faster version of the T2600 MFP. It is a production-grade device built for environments where output volume, colour accuracy, document throughput, and security all have to work simultaneously at scale. These are the four arguments that distinguish it from workgroup plotters.

360 A1/hr: Fastest Colour Technical Plotter in Its Class

At 6 A1/D colour pages per minute and 360 A1 pages per hour sustained, the XL 3800 is the fastest colour technical printer in the large-format market. A 20-drawing A1 tender set completes in under 3.5 minutes. A full set of 100 A1 construction drawings prints in under 17 minutes. The 100-page integrated stacker collects output automatically, so no operator needs to stand at the device. For large engineering firms running concurrent print queues, government reprographics departments managing daily document volumes, and copy shops handling client orders, this throughput removes the plotter as a production bottleneck entirely.

🗂️

Dual Spindle-Less Drawers and 100-Page Stacker: Unattended Production

The XL 3800 front-loads two rolls simultaneously via spindle-less drawers: no core threading, no manual roll mounting. Both drawers are accessible from the front, which is critical when the machine is installed against a wall. The 100-page integrated stacker is the only one of its kind in this class. Competing machines use basket or bin collection that requires manual sorting every 20 to 30 pages. The stacker holds 100 pages in sequence, face-down and in order, allowing operators to batch large jobs and collect once rather than monitor continuously. For daily volumes of 100 or more A1 sheets, this difference translates directly into recovered staff time and reduced job errors.

🗺️

PostScript 3 Native: GIS Maps and Colour Renderings on the First Print

The XL 3800 includes PostScript 3 natively. GIS maps exported from ArcGIS, QGIS, and MapInfo, colour architectural renderings from Revit and SketchUp, and complex multi-layer PDFs from AutoCAD and Civil 3D all process correctly on the first print without a RIP, without colour matching iterations, and without operator intervention. PostScript handles complex vector graphics, gradients, overprints, and transparency exactly as authored. For organisations where colour accuracy on the first print is a workflow requirement rather than a preference, this is a material difference from non-PostScript plotters. HP Flex Tech pigment inks are waterproof and fade-resistant for more than 25 years, making output suitable for archival project documentation and field-use copies alike.

🔒

Enterprise Security: FIPS 140-2, LDAP, TPM, and Runtime Intrusion Detection

The XL 3800 carries the most advanced security stack in the HP large-format range. HP SureStart validates firmware integrity at every boot. Runtime Intrusion Detection monitors memory and BIOS for unauthorised changes during operation. The 256 GB AES-256 encrypted SSD protects stored jobs at rest. LDAP and Kerberos authentication integrate with Active Directory to restrict access by user credentials. FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption secures all data in transit on the network. For government departments, utilities, financial institutions, and corporate environments with IT security policies covering network-connected devices, the XL 3800 meets requirements that workgroup plotters cannot address.

At What Volume Does the XL 3800 Justify Itself?

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP is a production-grade device. It is not the right choice for every practice, and the routing table below is designed to help you confirm whether your volume warrants it. At typical Johannesburg and Cape Town bureau rates of R15 to R25 per A1 sheet, the financial case builds quickly at scale.

Weekly A1 Volume Estimated Bureau Cost (per month) Estimated Bureau Cost (per year) Guidance
Up to 20 A1/week Up to R2,000/month Up to R24,000/year Consider the HP DesignJet T650 or T1600. The XL 3800 is over-specified at this volume.
20–100 A1/week R1,200–R10,000/month R14,400–R120,000/year HP DesignJet T2600 MFP typically breaks even within 18 months and is the correct match for this volume.
100–300 A1/week R6,000–R30,000/month R72,000–R360,000/year HP DesignJet XL3600 or XL 3800: production-grade throughput is justified at this volume. Contact Graficomp to compare.
300+ A1/week R18,000+ per month R216,000+ per year HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP: bureau outsourcing at this volume is not financially viable. The dual roll, stacker, and PostScript workflow eliminate manual handling costs that compound at scale.

These estimates are based on typical bureau rates in Johannesburg and Cape Town as of 2026. Contact Graficomp for a cost comparison based on your organisation's actual weekly volume, scan frequency, and colour output requirements.

500 ml cartridges reduce cost per page. HP 768 Flex Tech ink cartridges hold 500 ml each, roughly 4 to 10 times the volume of standard T-series cartridges. Fewer cartridge changes mean lower labour cost per A1 sheet at high volumes. Contact Graficomp for a consumables cost comparison based on your actual monthly output.
The 100-page stacker has a direct labour cost. Workgroup plotters using basket or bin collection require an operator to clear output every 20 to 30 pages to prevent jams or misordering. At 300 A1/week, that is 10 to 15 collection interruptions per day. The XL 3800's stacker eliminates those interruptions.

Workflow, Software, and Connectivity

AutoCAD, Revit, ArcGIS, and GIS Software Compatibility

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP works with any application that outputs to PDF, PostScript, or a standard Windows or macOS print driver. AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArchiCAD, ArcGIS, QGIS, and MapInfo all print correctly without plugins or special configuration. PostScript 3 processes complex vector graphics, overprints, gradients, and transparency layers as authored. For GIS teams printing colour maps with multiple data layers, this eliminates the test-print cycle that non-PostScript plotters require.

HP Click: Batch PDF Plotting Without a RIP

HP Click accepts PDF, JPEG, TIFF, DWF, and HP-GL/2 files. Drop multiple files into the queue, and the software detects each file's page size automatically. One click sends the entire batch to the printer. No driver configuration per file. No page-by-page size selection. For an engineering team submitting a 30-drawing tender set, HP Click removes the most time-consuming step in the print workflow. HP Click is not a RIP. AEC buyers do not need a RIP for standard CAD plotting or PDF output from GIS software.

HP Smart Stream: Production Workflow Automation. HP Smart Stream provides job nesting (fitting multiple drawings on one roll to reduce media waste), job queue management with priority routing, automatic media selection between the two drawers, and job cost accounting. For reprographics departments and copy shops processing client orders, Smart Stream is the production management layer that HP Click does not provide.
HP Click software — batch PDF plotting for large-format plotters

HP Click: batch plotting, no RIP required

HP Smart App — remote printer management

HP Smart: remote management and job submission

HP Command Center: Fleet Management

HP Command Center provides centralised monitoring and management for one or more XL 3800 units across a site or across multiple offices. Track ink levels, media status, job history, and device alerts remotely. For IT managers responsible for a print fleet, Command Center provides the same visibility they expect from enterprise office equipment. For reprographics operations running multiple XL 3800 units, it enables load balancing and proactive consumables management without walking the floor.

Connectivity

ConnectionDetails
Gigabit Ethernet1000Base-T standard. Recommended for all production and office environments. Supports concurrent multi-user print queues.
Wi-FiAvailable via optional HP Jetdirect wireless print server accessory. Not built in. Ethernet is the standard connection for this class of device.
Print ProtocolsTCP/IP, DHCP/AutoIP (IPv4 and IPv6), DHCPv6, SNMPv3, Raw IP (9100), LPD, IPP, WS Print.
HP Smart AppRemote job submission, queue management, ink level alerts, and device status from any mobile or desktop device.
HP Command CenterFleet management, remote monitoring, and usage reporting for one or multiple XL 3800 units.
Wi-Fi is not built into the XL 3800. Wi-Fi connectivity requires the optional HP Jetdirect wireless print server accessory. For production-volume environments, Gigabit Ethernet is the correct connection: it provides the bandwidth needed for large PostScript and PDF files without the latency variability of a wireless link. Contact Graficomp to discuss network infrastructure requirements before installation.

Ink, Scanner, and Technical Precision

HP Flex Tech Inks: UL ECOLOGO Certified, Pigment-Based

HP Flex Tech inks are the first large-format inks in the market to achieve UL ECOLOGO Certification, meeting strict environmental standards for chemical content and emissions. All four colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) are pigment-based, providing waterproof output and fade resistance of more than 25 years on standard bond paper. For organisations archiving as-built drawings, producing field-use copies of engineering plans, or printing GIS maps that will be handled outdoors, pigment inks on all four colours is a meaningful operational advantage over dye-based colour systems.

The 500 ml cartridge format (HP 768 series) reduces the frequency of cartridge changes at high volumes. A single cartridge change cycle that interrupts a 100-page batch job is a real production cost. At 300 or more A1 sheets per week, the 500 ml cartridges typically extend change intervals to weeks rather than days.

Line Accuracy and Print Resolution

The XL 3800 achieves plus or minus 0.1% line accuracy on A0 drawings printed in Normal mode on HP bond paper, the same standard as HP's T-series technical plotters. Print resolution is up to 2400 x 1200 optimised dpi. For construction drawings and engineering site plans, Normal mode delivers the precision required. The higher resolution settings are available for colour renderings and presentations where fine gradients and colour depth are priorities.

HP 768 ink cartridges (500 ml each): Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. All pigment-based. All UL ECOLOGO certified. HP 768 printheads: contact Graficomp for part numbers. Recyclable cardboard-based cartridge packaging reduces packaging waste compared to standard plastic cartridge systems.

Integrated CIS Scanner: Up to 50 m Continuous in PDF Mode

The XL 3800 integrates a 36-inch Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner with a straight-through paper path for originals up to 0.8 mm thick. This accepts cartridge paper, vellum, and standard bond originals without a manual feed guide. Scan speed is up to 7.62 cm/sec (3 inches per second) in colour at 200 dpi, and up to 25.4 cm/sec (10 inches per second) in greyscale. Copy speed in colour is up to 15.24 cm/sec (6 inches per second).

Maximum continuous scan length is 50 metres in PDF format, 16 metres in TIFF, and 8 metres in JPEG. This accommodates very long elevation drawings, sectional plans, and rolled site survey originals that shorter-path scanners cannot handle. File formats are JPEG, TIFF, and multi-page PDF. Copy scale runs from 25 to 400% at 1% increments.

Media Handling

Roll widths from 279 to 914 mm. Media weight range 60 to 328 g/m², which includes heavy coated papers and presentation media that T-series plotters with 220 g/m² limits cannot accept. Media thickness up to 0.5 mm (versus 0.3 mm on the T650 and T1600). Maximum roll weight 15 kg. Both drawers are spindle-less and front-loading.

Environmental Credentials

The XL 3800 is built with 33% post-consumer recycled plastic by hardware weight, carries ENERGY STAR and EPEAT registration, and uses the first UL ECOLOGO certified inks in the large-format market. For AEC practices and government organisations responding to sustainability-rated tenders, these certifications are procurement qualifiers.

Driver and firmware configuration matters at production volumes. At 300+ A1 sheets per week, incorrect driver configuration, suboptimal HP Click settings, or mismatched PostScript output from GIS software are the most common causes of colour variance and speed shortfalls. Graficomp configures the driver, firmware, HP Click, and HP Command Center as part of every XL 3800 installation to ensure the device performs at specification from the first production run.

The XL 3800 is the right choice if...

  • Your daily output is 100 or more A1 pages
  • You produce colour GIS maps, architectural renderings, or complex PDFs that require PostScript accuracy
  • You need dual roll so mixed A1 and A0 jobs run without media changes
  • You need a 100-page stacker to eliminate manual output collection
  • Your IT security policy requires LDAP, FIPS 140-2, or encrypted storage on network-connected devices
  • You are running a reprographics or copy shop handling client production orders

Consider the HP DesignJet XL3600 MFP instead if...

  • Your volume is 100–300 A1/week and speed is not the critical constraint
  • You need production-class MFP features without paying for class-leading throughput
  • You want the same dual-roll and scanning capability at a lower cost of entry

The HP DesignJet XL3600 MFP prints at 3 A1/min in colour, half the XL 3800's rate, but with comparable media handling and security features. Contact Graficomp for a side-by-side cost of ownership comparison.

Consider the HP DesignJet T2600 MFP instead if...

  • Your output is under 100 A1/day and you need enterprise security with scanning
  • Your team has multiple users sharing one workgroup MFP
  • Budget constraints make a workgroup device the practical choice

The HP DesignJet T2600 MFP prints 180 A1/hr, integrates a 600 dpi scanner, and includes HP's enterprise security stack including LDAP, Kerberos, and secure erase. For organisations printing under 100 A1/day, it is the economically correct choice.

HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP: Frequently Asked Questions

Each answer is written to stand alone, optimised for AI-assisted search and passage retrieval.

At what daily volume does the HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP make sense compared to the T2600 MFP?

The HP DesignJet T2600 MFP operates at 180 A1 pages per hour and is the correct workgroup MFP for organisations printing under 100 A1 pages per day. The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP operates at 360 A1 pages per hour (double the throughput), adds dual spindle-less roll drawers, a 100-page integrated stacker, PostScript 3 natively, and a larger encrypted SSD. For organisations printing 100 or more A1 pages per day, the XL 3800's production features justify the step up: the stacker alone eliminates 10 to 15 manual output collection interruptions daily at that volume, and the dual-roll configuration removes media change delays from mixed A1 and A0 jobs. For reprographics operations and copy shops, the difference is more fundamental: the XL 3800 is designed as a production device, the T2600 as a workgroup device.

What does PostScript 3 capability mean and why does it matter for AEC and GIS work?

PostScript is a page description language that describes every element of a printed page, including complex vector graphics, gradients, overprints, and transparency layers, as mathematical instructions rather than as a rasterised image. PostScript 3 is the current generation, used by ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo, Revit, SketchUp, and most professional design applications for their highest-fidelity print output. When a GIS map or architectural colour rendering is sent to a PostScript-capable printer, the device processes the PostScript instructions natively and produces output that matches the authored file exactly, on the first print. Non-PostScript plotters require either a RIP (which adds cost and complexity) or HP-GL/2 and PDF output paths that may not preserve all layers, gradients, or colour spaces correctly. For organisations where colour accuracy and graphic fidelity on the first print is a workflow requirement, PostScript 3 eliminates the test-print and colour-matching cycle entirely.

How do the dual spindle-less drawers work on the HP DesignJet XL 3800?

The XL 3800 front-loads two rolls simultaneously via spindle-less drawers. Instead of threading a roll onto a spindle and mounting it inside the printer, you slide the roll directly into the drawer from the front. Both drawers are accessible from the front of the machine, which means the XL 3800 can be installed with its back against a wall, a practical advantage in offices where floor space is limited. Each drawer accepts rolls from 279 to 914 mm wide. Two different roll widths can be loaded simultaneously, so an A1-wide roll in one drawer and an A0-wide roll in the other allows the printer to switch between formats automatically based on the job. No operator intervention, no media change delay.

What is the 100-page integrated stacker and why is it significant?

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP includes a 100-page integrated stacker that collects printed output face-down and in job order without requiring an operator to stand at the device. Competing plotters in this class, including the HP DesignJet T2600 MFP, use basket or bin collection. Basket collection holds 20 to 30 pages before becoming full or disordered, requiring an operator to clear the basket repeatedly during a large batch job. The XL 3800's stacker holds 100 pages in sequence, meaning a full set of 100 A1 construction drawings can print unattended and be collected once, in order, at the end of the job. For organisations printing 100 or more pages per day, the labour cost of basket collection is a real, measurable workflow overhead that the stacker eliminates.

Can the HP DesignJet XL 3800 scanner handle A0 originals and very long drawings?

Yes. The XL 3800's CIS scanner accepts originals up to 914 mm (36 inches) wide, which covers A0 drawings (841 mm wide). The straight-through paper path handles originals up to 0.8 mm thick, which includes standard cartridge drawing paper and vellum without a manual feed guide. Maximum continuous scan length is 50 metres in PDF format, 16 metres in TIFF, and 8 metres in JPEG. This accommodates very long elevation drawings, building sections, and site survey originals that exceed the capacity of shorter-path scanners. Scan speed is up to 3 inches per second in colour at 200 dpi, and up to 10 inches per second in greyscale at 200 dpi. Copy speed in colour is up to 6 inches per second.

What are HP Flex Tech inks and what makes the UL ECOLOGO certification significant?

HP Flex Tech inks are HP's pigment-based ink system for the DesignJet XL series, supplied in 500 ml cartridges. All four colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) are pigment-based, which means output is waterproof and fade-resistant for more than 25 years on standard bond paper. HP Flex Tech inks are the first large-format inks in the market to achieve UL ECOLOGO Certification, a third-party environmental standard that assesses chemical composition, manufacturing processes, and emissions performance. For government organisations, universities, and companies with procurement sustainability requirements, UL ECOLOGO certified consumables are a qualifying criterion on certain tender frameworks. The 500 ml cartridge format means fewer cartridge changes at high volume: at 300 or more A1 sheets per week, HP 768 cartridges typically last several weeks rather than days.

Does the HP DesignJet XL 3800 work with AutoCAD, Revit, ArcGIS, QGIS, and other GIS software?

Yes. The XL 3800 works with any application that outputs to PostScript, PDF, or a standard Windows or macOS print driver. AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArchiCAD, ArcGIS, QGIS, and MapInfo all print to the XL 3800 without plugins, add-ins, or special configuration. For batch PDF plotting, HP Click accepts multiple files with automatic page-size detection. For GIS workflows, PostScript 3 output from ArcGIS or QGIS processes natively and produces colour-accurate output on the first print, without a separate RIP. HP-GL/2 is also natively supported for direct driver output from AutoCAD and MicroStation.

What is HP Command Center and when does an organisation need HP Smart Stream?

HP Command Center is a fleet management tool that provides remote monitoring and management of one or more XL 3800 units. From Command Center, IT managers and production supervisors can view ink levels, media status, job history, device alerts, and usage statistics without walking to the device. For organisations with multiple XL 3800 units or with the printer installed in a separate print room, Command Center provides the oversight that enterprise IT departments expect from network-connected devices. HP Smart Stream is a separate production workflow application that adds job nesting (fitting multiple drawings on one roll to reduce media waste), job queue prioritisation, automatic media selection between drawers, and cost accounting per job. Smart Stream is relevant for reprographics operations and copy shops managing client print orders at scale. Contact Graficomp to discuss whether Smart Stream is included or needs to be licensed separately for your configuration.

What does the HP DesignJet XL 3800 weigh and what floor requirements does it need?

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP weighs 182 kg and measures 1603 mm wide, 614 mm deep, and 1225 mm tall. It requires a flat, level floor that can sustain a point load of at least 200 kg in the device's footprint. Standard commercial office floors with concrete slab construction are suitable. Raised access floors or lightweight suspended floors may require structural assessment before installation. The machine's depth of 614 mm means it can be positioned with its back against a wall, as both roll drawers and the scanner feed from the front. Graficomp's installation team assesses the installation location before delivery and advises on floor preparation, power outlet positioning, and network cable routing. A single 15 A, 220–240 V dedicated circuit is required.

Does the HP DesignJet XL 3800 have Wi-Fi built in?

No. The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP has Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T) as its standard network connection. Wi-Fi is available via the optional HP Jetdirect wireless print server accessory. For a production-volume device processing large PostScript and PDF files, Gigabit Ethernet is the correct connection: it provides consistent bandwidth without the latency variability or signal strength dependency that wireless connections introduce. In practice, XL 3800 installations in production and office environments connect via Ethernet. Contact Graficomp if Wi-Fi is a specific requirement at your site.

What security certifications does the HP DesignJet XL 3800 hold?

The HP DesignJet XL 3800 MFP includes: HP SureStart (validates firmware integrity at boot), Secure Boot, Allowlisting (only authorised firmware and software execute), Runtime Intrusion Detection (monitors memory and BIOS during operation), TPM (Trusted Platform Module for credential storage), LDAP and Kerberos authentication (Active Directory integration for user access control), Role-Based Access Control (restrict print, scan, and copy by user role), SNMPv3, HTTPS, IPsec/Firewall, TLS 1.0 through 1.3, and FIPS 140-2 compliant encryption for all data in transit. Internal storage is a 256 GB SSD encrypted with AES-256. For government departments, utilities, and financial institutions with IT security policies covering network-connected devices, this security stack satisfies the requirements that workgroup plotters cannot meet. Graficomp configures LDAP integration and reviews security settings with your IT team as part of every XL 3800 installation.
